Taxiway Echo Extension will Further Improve Traffic Flow and Safety at CEA
CEA is ready for another safety enhancement to the airfield: a 780 foot extension of Taxiway Echo running along the north side of Runway 12-30. "The project is intendeded to correct a complicated section of the airport where a pilot may get confused and inadvertently enter into the runway environment without proper permission from FAA Air Traffic Control" states Jamie Abbott, Assistant Airport Manager. "We are taking action is in response to a Runway Safety Action Team (RSAT) recommendation", said Abbott.
"Plans call for extending the taxiway in 10' thick concrete pavement and performing an asphalt overlay of a 22 year old section of existing Taxiway Echo and 800 feet of Taxiway Bravo. The cost of the project is $2.1 million. Of that, 95% is from Federal dollars from the airway trust fund and 2.5 % each is from state and airport generated matching funding. As in the past, zero dollars from the Village of Wheeling and the City of Prospect Heights are used to operate the airport. The project should be completed by the end of summer.
